Your ADHD Brain Has a Superpower, but that Superpower Has a Dark Side

A few weeks ago, I spent eight hours on a beach reading an entire thriller novel cover to cover. I wrote about that day in a previous post as an example of healthy hyperfocus — letting my ADHD brain lock onto something it loved, with my full permission, and coming away calmer for it.


What I didn't write about in that post is what the other version of hyperfocus looks like. Because I know that one too. Intimately. It looks like 11pm becoming 1am becoming "wait, is it already getting light outside" while I scroll through an infinite feed of other people's curated lives, feeling steadily worse with every swipe and somehow unable to put the phone down.


Same brain. Same neurological mechanism. Wildly different outcomes.


A new study from the University of Bath, released in late 2025, found that adults with ADHD who recognize and actively use their strengths — creativity, humor, hyperfocus — report significantly better wellbeing, quality of life, and fewer mental health symptoms.¹ This tracks with everything I know about my own brain. Hyperfocus, when aimed at something that serves me, is one of the best things about having ADHD.


But hyperfocus is not inherently good. It's a tool. And like any tool, what it builds depends entirely on what you point it at.

What The Research Actually Says About ADHD Strengths


The University of Bath study is part of a broader and genuinely welcome shift in how ADHD is being researched — away from a pure deficit model toward something more honest: ADHD brains have real, measurable strengths, and people who lean into those strengths fare better than people who don't.¹


Creativity, humor, and hyperfocus were the three traits most commonly identified by adults with ADHD as personal strengths in the study. And critically, the benefit wasn't just in having these traits — it was in recognizing them and actively using them. Awareness plus application equals better outcomes.


This matters because so much of the ADHD narrative — even well-intentioned ADHD content — frames the condition purely as a list of things to manage, suppress, or work around. The Bath research suggests something different: some of what makes your brain harder to live with in a neurotypical-designed world is the exact same wiring that makes you good at things other people aren't.


Hyperfocus is the clearest example. The capacity to become so absorbed in something that time disappears, that hunger disappears, that the outside world genuinely recedes — that is not a malfunction. That is a brain capable of depth that most people can't access on command.


The question the research doesn't fully answer, and the one I think matters most: depth toward what?



The Same Mechanism, Two Completely Different Outcomes


Here's the comparison I want to draw, because I think it's the most honest way to understand what's actually happening.


Hyperfocus Output A: Eight hours on a beach, one finished novel. I came home tired in the good way. My nervous system was calm. I'd had a full day of genuine enjoyment, undiluted by guilt, and I slept well that night.


Hyperfocus Output B: Three hours in bed, infinite scroll, zero finished anything. I came away wired and exhausted simultaneously — the specific flavor of tired that doesn't lead to sleep. My self-esteem had taken quiet, repeated hits I didn't even consciously register until I noticed the cumulative mood the next morning. And I had nothing to show for the three hours except a phone battery at 12%.


Both of these are hyperfocus. The ADHD brain locked onto a stimulus and didn't let go. The mechanism — sustained, absorbed attention that overrides normal stopping cues — is identical.

The difference is entirely about the input and what it does to you while you're absorbed in it.



Why Doomscrolling Specifically Hits the ADHD Brain So Hard


For years, my algorithm was full of influencers. The lifestyle content — perfect skin, perfect bodies, perfect homes, perfect mornings that somehow involved a sunrise run, a green smoothie, and meaningful journaling before 7am while also running a business and raising children.


I felt worse after almost every session. Not dramatically — just a slow accumulation of why isn't my life like that and what am I doing wrong that built up night after night until it became a baseline hum of inadequacy I'd stopped noticing as unusual.


The research on this is not ambiguous. Exposure to idealized images and unrealistic standards is strongly associated with emotional distress, anxiety, and low self-worth.² The mechanism is social comparison — and specifically, upward social comparison, where you're measuring yourself against people who are presented as better off, and the gap feels both vast and somehow like a personal failing.


What makes this particularly cruel is that the comparison is based on something that mostly isn't real. Subtle filters that smooth skin and reshape bodies without looking like an obvious filter. Professional lighting. Strategic posing that creates the illusion of a figure that doesn't exist in real life. Cosmetic procedures — fillers, Botox — that get carefully omitted from the "all natural" skincare routine being sold to you, because if you knew about the procedures, you probably wouldn't buy the $80 serum they're pushing.

Nobody who works full-time, raises a family, and lives a real life has the time, money, or team required to produce what gets presented as effortless. The research confirms what most of us suspect but can't always articulate in the moment: the more upward social comparison content someone consumes, the more negative social comparison behaviors and self-reported envy they experience — and this effect disproportionately impacts people who already have lower self-esteem.² For an ADHD brain — which frequently already carries self-esteem wounds from years of being told to try harder, focus better, be less much — this content lands on ground that's already tender.


And here's the part specific to ADHD: once the hyperfocus mechanism locks onto the scroll, the normal internal signals that would say "okay, this is making me feel bad, I should stop" get overridden by the same mechanism that let me read for eight hours on a beach. The brain doesn't differentiate between "this absorption is good for me" and "this absorption is actively harming me." It just absorbs.


Add in late-night doomscrolling about the state of the world — the economy, the news, one crisis after another — and you've built a machine specifically engineered to keep an ADHD brain awake, anxious, and feeling worse, for hours, every single night.



What I Did About It — And What's In My Feed Now


I didn't quit social media. I didn't even significantly reduce my time on it, if I'm honest. What I did was retrain the algorithm — deliberately, gradually, by engaging with different content until the feed reflected what I fed it.


My feed now is mostly: Bernese mountain dogs. House bunnies — the rabbit kind, not the other kind, though I understand the confusion. Genuinely good news from around the world. Research and science content. Quantum physics, which I do not fully understand and find delightful anyway.


It is dramatically easier to fall asleep when my brain is full of a golden retriever discovering snow for the first time than when it's full of someone else's "morning routine" or the latest reason to be afraid of the future.


This isn't about toxic positivity or pretending hard things don't exist. It's about recognizing that my hyperfocus is going to land somewhere for however long I'm scrolling, and I get to have some say in where.



Redirecting Hyperfocus Toward Things That Build Something


The flip side of "doomscrolling is hyperfocus pointed at something harmful" is "hyperfocus pointed at something generative can build genuinely remarkable things" — and I want to give you real examples, because this is where the University of Bath research becomes actionable rather than just validating.


It can become a credential — and income. Before grad school, I became completely fixated on earning a PMI certification in AI project management. I studied for hours every day, built my own practice exams and study guides because the existing ones weren't good enough for how my brain needed to learn. I passed. And then — because the hyperfocus didn't fully turn off — I packaged those practice exams and published them on Udemy. That fixation now generates passive income. In an economy where everything costs more than it used to, a hyperfixation that becomes a side income stream is not a small thing.


It can be something with zero productive output and that's completely fine. Scrapbooking is one of mine. I can spend hours on a single page layout, or lose an entire afternoon wandering Michaels or Hobby Lobby looking at paper and stickers I don't strictly need. It produces nothing except a finished page and the specific calm that comes from a brain that got to do the thing it wanted to do, fully, without interruption.


It can connect you to something larger than yourself. I love long walks, especially on the beach. For a while I was hyperfocused on finding sand dollars. I turned it into a challenge: I couldn't stop walking until I found one. I started telling myself that finding one meant it would be a good week.


Here's the part of this story that still gives me chills. The day I moved out of the apartment I'd shared with my ex — the relationship I've written about, the one that hurt me in ways that took years to fully understand — I was moving into a new place. Ground floor, with a community garden right outside that I could tend every day. That evening, after I'd carried in nearly everything, I stepped outside. Lying in the grass, right next to my new garden, was a sand dollar.


In the grass. Not on a beach. Next to an apartment I'd never lived in before, on the day I was leaving behind something that had hurt me, on my way toward something that — it turned out — would heal me.


I don't know what that was. I'm not going to pretend I do. But I know that a hyperfixation that started as a beach walk challenge became something that found me exactly when I needed a sign that things were going to be okay. I wasn't just going to have a good week, I was going to have a good life.



A Quick Audit For Your Own Hyperfocus


If you want to start noticing where your hyperfocus is landing, ask yourself these questions about whatever you find yourself losing hours to:


How do I feel when I stop? Calm and satisfied, or wired and worse than when I started? This single question is often enough to tell you everything.


Did I choose this, or did it choose me? Reading a book on the beach was a choice I made in advance. Doomscrolling at 11pm rarely starts as a choice — it starts as "just checking one thing" and the hyperfocus mechanism takes it from there.


Does this build toward anything — including just genuine rest? Scrapbooking builds toward a finished page and a calm nervous system. A side-hustle hyperfixation builds toward income or a skill. Doomscrolling builds toward 1am and a worse mood at 7am.


What's actually in the content? If you're consistently consuming content that makes you feel like you're failing at a life that was never real to begin with — that's worth noticing, and worth deliberately changing. Algorithms respond to what you engage with. You have more control over your feed than it feels like you do.


The goal isn't to eliminate hyperfocus — that would mean eliminating one of the best things about an ADHD brain. The goal is to notice where it's currently pointed, and to remember that you get to aim it.
